Express Entry

Express Entry is an online immigration system that manages skilled workers applications for permanent residence to Canada under federal and certain provincial economic programs.

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program: This program is for skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently.

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program: In order to qualify for FST, a candidate must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade (or an equal amount in part-time). This experience must have been obtained within the previous 5 years and only considers work experience obtained after an individual has been granted the certification to practice the trade in their country of residence.

  • Canada Experience Class: The CEC is a permanent residence category for people with skilled work experience in Canada. It was developed for temporary foreign workers and foreign graduates with qualifying Canadian work experience.

Provincial Nominee Program

PNP stands for Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program, a Canadian immigration program run through a collaboration between the provincial-territorial governments and the federal government of Canada. PNP is regarded to be an expedited or fast-tracked pathway to Canadian immigration.

This program is for workers who:

  • Have the skills, education and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province or territory

  • Want to live in that province, and

  • Want to become permanent residents of Canada

Permanant Residence (PR)

A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries.

As a permanent resident, you have the right to:

  • Get most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage,

  • Live, work or study anywhere in Canada,

  • Apply for Canadian citizenship,

  • Protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

To get permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous.

Family Sponsorship

If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, you can sponsor certain family members to become Canadian permanent residents. Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada.

Spousal & Family Sponsorship: You can sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent child if:

  • You’re at least 18 years old

  • You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

  • You can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor

Parents & Grandparents Sponsorship: You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents if:

Super Visa: A super visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for up to 2 years at a time. It’s a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years. If you want to stay for 6 months or less, apply for a visitor visa.

Temporary Visas

A Temporary Resident Visa, also referred to as a visitor visa, is an official document issued by a Canadian visa office that shows that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Study Permit: The study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Your study permit is NOT a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada; you may need a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA).

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): A PGWP allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience gained through the PGWP helps graduates qualify for Permanent Residence in Canada.

Open Work Permit: You may be eligible for an open work permit if:

  • You are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for PGWP

  • You have applied for permanent residence in Canada

  • You are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence

  • You are a temporary resident permit holder.

Spousal Work Permit: If you are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or an international student, your spouse can work in Canada. You must apply for your own work permit independent of your partners.

Visitor Visa: A visitor visa is an official document that shows that you meet the requirements needed to enter Canada. Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

Visitor Visa

Caregiver Visa: As a caregiver, you have the option to come to Canada to become a PR or work temporarily.

LMIA based Work Permit: A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA shows that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. Once an employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit.

Pilot Programs

Immigration pilots are limited term programs designed to address the needs of particular areas and communities in Canada. These pilot programs aim to bring unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled foreigners in to address these shortages by creating a path to permanent residence for those who want to live and work permanently in Canada.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot: This program helps employers in Atlantic Canada hire foreign skilled workers who want to immigrate to Atlantic Canada and international graduates who want to stay in Atlantic Canada after they graduate. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot helps hire qualified candidates for jobs that haven’t been able to be filled locally. These candidates can be overseas or living in Canada temporarily.

Rural & Northern Immigration Pilot: This program is a community-driven program. It is designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities by creating a path to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers who want to work and live in one of the participating communities.

Home Care Provider Pilot: This program makes provision for foreign workers with an offer to take care of minors such as nannies and au pairs.
